To use Thai or not to use Thai?

Why learning Thai has helped me so much in the classroom

My philosophy on spoken communication has always been that perfect grammar, extensive vocabulary and intimate knowledge of tenses are all totally worthless if the listener cannot understand the words that are coming out of your mouth.

Go Genki

An unusual approach to teaching vocabulary

Why don't you try Genki English now? Once you have tried it, your teaching worries will be over, lessons will be enjoyed, dynamic students will be developed and most of all your classrooms will come alive.

A fruitful visit

When English club students and international school students meet

The purpose of the trip was to give my English Club members an opportunity to experience learning being in an English environment so that they could get inspiration to like English more.

I love teaching in Thailand!

Postbox letter from Duncan Scobie

I'm bored of hearing teachers bitch about this place. It's a very long way from being perfect but who wants perfect?

Teaching quality vs teaching quantity

What to do when the odds are stacked against you?

So apparently my current Mathayom 2 reading class didn't finish the reading book assigned in Mathayom 1. The result is that I've been told I must teach both that book AND the one I was assigned to teach... in one semester.

My anniversary

A year in Thailand

Land of Smiles, if it's not terribly inconvenient, might I stay forever?

Too old, but do I care?

Postbox letter from James

Continuing along the line of ageism; now in my late 50’s I am still sought after and have a huge pick of schools to choose from.

Can't Speak English?

Postbox letter from Pablo Gravoso

I am sure that my students will sooner or later become school administrators. I hope that they will not look at the color of the skin when they hire ESL teachers. They can hire whites, blacks or Asians. It doesn't matter. What is important is that they should look at the qualifications.

Happy and exhausted reflections from a newbie teacher

Postbox letter from Jojo Tiger

What an intense year this has been. So many people inspired me along the way, fellow teachers, ex teachers friends and total strangers.

Teaching corporate classes

Mixing it with the suits

A few weeks ago, an opportunity finally presented itself through my part-time language school to teach two evenings per week at an engineering firm in the Ekkamai area. I jumped on the chance, and I must say: I'm so glad I did!
