The promise of tomorrow

Making the classroom a sacred place

For every reputable school that is looking for serious, responsible, caring, and dedicated teachers who are committed to the success of the students, there are many more who simply don't care about the teachers they hire or the students under their tutelage.

Determine your own significance

The true value of an English teacher

Native English teachers incompetent in the classroom? Of course they're incompetent. Many of them, anyway. Then again, many of the Korean English teachers are incompetent as well.

Teaching in an intercultural environment

What are some of the issues facing educators in a foreign land?

Studying culture is no substitute for the practical experience of working and living abroad, however having some mental frameworks in which to analysis experiences could be helpful in adjusting to working and living in a new cultural environment.

Are TEFL qualifications necessary?

Let's consider what can go wrong after TEFL courses.

One argument against qualifications is that teaching experience itself is enough to guarantee a good teacher. Not so. I have recently been learning French in an institution where my intermediate classmates are often poor performers in their out-of-class interactions. And for what reason?

Show me that you love me

The Bangkok freak show, and my response to John Wilson.

Last month John Wilson, the director of a Language Institute in Thailand, wrote an article for www.ajarn.com. It was an article about creating a good impression at job interviews.

The dreaded teaching observation lesson

Angel or daemon?

Do they perform a useful function, or are they an instrument of control often misused by the resident DOS?

Why teacher can't write

Postbox letter from

We are too busy to do anything else but teach. Yet, there’s something bogus about teaching language or literature 20 periods a week and never connecting with your subject matter out of the classroom.

The Growing Pains of the TEFL Industry

My take on another ajarn.com writer's column

I can understand Steve's disillusion with someone he probably trusted and looked up to. I also think part of his criticism is justified; teachers, administrators, recruiters and policy-makers alike should question themselves and the industry they are in more regularly. I do not, however, agree with the overall image that Steve paints of the EFL industry.

Thai teaching assistants

Angels from the planet Xerox or Satan's snitch?

They are as much a part of a teaching package as subsidized health insurance, the occasional sports day and possible unpaid test-marking. We want to hear about yours. When asked to make photocopies does she say "coming right up oh great white-skinned one" or does she beat a path to the dean's door to remind him that slavery has been abolished?

One thing wrong with Thailand

Postbox letter from RM

The only thing wrong with Thailand is the foreigners.
