When your pay is late

What should teachers do when their salary is not paid into their account in a timely manner

In Thailand, where smiles and patience are valued, some schools may rely on teachers not wanting to “make a fuss.” But a pattern of late salary payments is not something to smile through. It’s not just disrespectful, it’s a breach of contract, and a sign of deeper problems.

Can you teach science?

A simple question that led to a most unbelievable runaround

I got an interview for a science teacher position here in Thailand. The owner of the education employment agency started by asking me how long I plan to stay in Thailand. I said, "A long time because I like Thailand." He asked me what I like about Thailand. I said, "What's to not like about Thailand?"

Just because its on university grounds

Postbox letter from Gayle Smith

There are many great schools in Thailand, with excellent administrators and wonderful staff. However, the opposite is also true. Some schools have been formed with the express intention of attracting students through apparent connections and links to universities.

The school that once was

Postbox letter from Mr. Greenberg

A well regarded school, a school with a beautifully rich history, is now perceived as something else. Asked about the school’s services, a Thai faculty member, who asked not to be named said, “most of what is happening now is all for show.”

The chalkies need a real change

Postbox letter from Mr Grumpy

Nothing can prepare the foreign teacher for the employee-to-management-to-admin staff life. Dealing with these matters can drive the most experienced teachers up the wall and can turn a normally friendly teacher into a paranoid wreck!

Isaan bound

A half year in review

Not surprisingly, I am still wrestling with the administration over issues of fair pay, planning time and sensible class-size and leveling. Despite everything, I am having a great time in Khon Kaen.
