Let's play Bangkok monopoly

What would the Bangkok edition of the Monopoly board game look like?

Recently I was asked to play the Thai edition of the game, first produced in 2005, but I was disappointed to discover that the game is not based on Bangkok, but on Thailand, with the likes of Samui, Phuket and Pattaya dotted around the board

My Chiang Mai

People, places and events and all things Northern Thailand

I guess for my first blog I should talk about my journey to become a teacher in Chiang Mai. It started way back in 1990 when I travelled from Australia back home to the UK.

Perils of the Thai property market

Some pitfalls to watch out for in terms of after-sales service

There are reputable and quality players in the Thai real estate markets, but there are also many ‘me-too' entrants. Politely and in the nicest possible terms these people can be referred to independent agents or freelancers.

Is Ratchadaphisek the new Sukhumvit?

An area of Bangkok that is rapidly gaining in popularity as a place to live

So what has happened to Ratchada to transform it into this now arguably superior status? Well obviously it has benefitted immensely from the MRT stations and metro line and this has given Ratchada not only a new lease of life, but has encouraged others to come and live in the area.

The skytrain to nowhere

I've stumbled upon one of Bangkok's darkest secrets

Are you like me, one of those weary sky-train passengers, looking at those gleaming new BTS stations and wondering simply, when?

Yet another list of Bangkok annoyances

We all love a good moan now and again don't we?

Here’s a list of my own things that drive me crazy about living in Bangkok. Hopefully some of them you’ve never even thought about.

There's someone in the house!

When things go bump in the night.

I thought I would share the story of a recent break in, at my house, in an effort to show the fine police work that our boys in brown are doing and to let you know that hope in the criminal justice system of Thailand is alive and well

Teacher's crib

Look what I did Mom!

Take a look at what teacher Steve Salyer has done to his studio apartment in Sukhumwit 71. Let Steve be your inspiration. Now isn't it about time you paid more attention to your living environment and stopped your mother worrying so much?

Thailand on 30K a month

Is it feast or famine?

With many teaching positions on the ajarn jobs page paying 30,000 baht a month (some even less) forum member Hollow has decided to put things to the test and record his daily spend. Many employers tell us that 30,000 baht a month is enough to live a very comfortable lifestyle - even in Bangkok. I've heard Thai people describe that kind of dough as 'luxury' Then again perhaps that's a load of old tosh. So does 30K a month enable you to lord it up right until the last day of the month or are you going to be stumbling through the final week on a diet of pot noodles and tap water? OK Hollow. Pencil? Notebook? Let's begin.

B2K

Postbox letter from Mike Thompson

As an Asian American who has been back to visit Thailand several times, I’ve noticed many changes over the years.
