Say no to schools paying low rates

Postbox letter from Ken

Should ajarn.com pull the plug on those schools that are offering teachers a measly 200 baht an hour?

Severance pay part two

Postbox letter from Justice for Chalkies

This act exemption appears to be an outright example how the elite control information taught in the schools and how teachers are kept under control.

What about a teachers association?

Postbox letter from Johnny Kay

Teachers need to get hardline and not just wimp out when they don't get paid.

Teachers rights

Know your rights as a teacher in Thailand

I have always been amazed by how little most foreigners and Thai people know about Thai Labor Law. Why wouldn’t you want to know what your rights are under the law?

There are teaching jobs out there

Postbox letter from Ben Richards

I've just completed my first month at a language centre. I waited for a good job rather than accepting one I wouldn't be happy with and I'm very pleased with my decision. I've earned just over 40k this month, and I am very confident my income will rise in the coming months

Four times the salary of a local Thai?

What a load of bullshit!

Nothing irks me more than reading that statement and you see it all over the web wherever the topic of teaching in Thailand is discussed or promoted. It’s a statement that’s both grossly misleading and wildly inaccurate.

An alternative guide

A rough guide to the lonely planet of teaching in SE Asia

If you studied TEFL or CELTA in your home country, something that would have almost definitely been lacking from your course was your tutors experience and knowledge of SE Asia.

Thailand on 30K a month

Is it feast or famine?

With many teaching positions on the ajarn jobs page paying 30,000 baht a month (some even less) forum member Hollow has decided to put things to the test and record his daily spend. Many employers tell us that 30,000 baht a month is enough to live a very comfortable lifestyle - even in Bangkok. I've heard Thai people describe that kind of dough as 'luxury' Then again perhaps that's a load of old tosh. So does 30K a month enable you to lord it up right until the last day of the month or are you going to be stumbling through the final week on a diet of pot noodles and tap water? OK Hollow. Pencil? Notebook? Let's begin.

Low teacher salaries

Is ajarn.com partly to blame?

No, ajarn.com isn't responsible for low teacher salaries - at least not according to Louis Minson. Louis says that not presenting a realistic picture of the overall job situation would be sweeping things under the carpet.

The need to be realistic

Postbox letter from Mr John

I have some degree of sympathy to those who find it difficult to hire teachers
