The return to paradise

Sand Dust: Part Two

I am happy to announce that I am back living in Thailand. I arrived here in mid-June after completing my last work contract renewal in Saudi Arabia.

Thailand? yes we went there last weekend

When one man's tropical paradise becomes everybody else's

I can vividly recall all the fuss and palaver that surrounded my first trip to Thailand all those years ago. My Aunt Jean – not the most traveled woman I'll admit – called me on the phone as I was packing a suitcase and reminded me to take a few bars of soap.

Second season syndrome

How does the second year of teaching in Thailand compare to the first?

Having just passed my two-year anniversary in Thailand I thought I would look and see if I suffered from Thai second season syndrome - and how it might affect you if you decide to come to Thailand.

Coming to live and teach in Thailand?

You can do it - but have a plan!

First decide which camp you are in. There are two. Either you are coming to Thailand because you want to live here or you are coming to Thailand because you want to teach here. It's important to make this distinction.

Longing to be back home

What on earth can my wife and I do to make things happen?

So after being back in Australia for 7 months now, I'm still disappointed and can't settle here either whichever way I try. I have tried several different jobs and in my heart they don't really suit me. I guess I really just miss the Thai lifestyle I have been waiting so long for.

What makes a good international school?

What are the the things a teacher should know beforehand?

Everyone always says 'research' is the number one thing for teachers hopping off to a far away teaching nirvana and they would be right, but it isn't until you are deep inside the doors of an international school that you suddenly have a plethora of questions you probably should have asked.

Moving to Bangkok

What I did right and what I did wrong

When I moved to Bangkok, I wasn't really sure what I was doing. Looking back, I can honestly say that I did some things right and other things I did completely wrong! Maybe you can learn from my mistakes.

Neighborhood watch

How do Bangkok neighborhoods differ?

I've been thinking about the five different neighborhoods I have lived in during my twenty-odd years in Bangkok. Which ones did I enjoy? Were there any neighborhoods that I particularly hated? What were the advantages and disadvantages of each community that I spent time in? Perhaps it would be interesting to draw some comparisons.

What to expect when you move to Thailand

Life in the sticks and other oddities

I packed my bags and moved to Thailand to eventually become an English teacher. I was offered jobs in different parts of Thailand, but I quickly decided to move to a village in the North East region of Thailand, as opposed to a city. Moving from a city in Canada to a village in Thailand is a radical change but it's the type of challenge I was looking for.

Getting hitched in the Land of Smiles

Continuing the adventure but as a married teacher

Hi, I am Elizabeth (Miss Ellie if you are one of my 5 year old students) and I am a homeroom teacher at an International school in Nonthaburi. I moved here from South Korea where I lived and taught for a year
