Teaching for 300 baht an hour as the rest of the world enjoys itself
They are the shopping mall English teachers - gliding like pale, undernourished phantoms amid the hordes of weekend Thai shoppers. The main reason I empathize with the shopping mall teacher is because I was once one myself. I know how desperate and soul-destroying it can be.
I really respect the people that come to Thailand and get jobs working in schools to help students learn English. I've worked these types of job in the past and know that I've made a difference in the lives of many of the students that I've worked with.
There seemed to be a time when 30-40,000 baht a month salaries were the norm, and I suppose like many teachers I felt that things were only going to get better. But what's going on in Thailand?
Always make sure you know how an employer is working out your pay.
I'm calling for a union to be set up with demands for an hourly minimum wage.
Should ajarn.com pull the plug on those schools that are offering teachers a measly 200 baht an hour?
