Assistant House Parent

Objective of the post
Our Assistant Houseparents are primarily responsible for all aspects of the well-being of the boarders in their care. They also need to manage efficiently the organisation and resources of the house; to provide for the safety, good discipline and pastoral well-being of all pupils in the House.

Main Responsibilities
A. Be responsible for all aspects of safeguarding, care and well-being of the boarders in their House.
B. They are responsible for the good order of the boarders and their possessions on a day to day basis.
C. They oversee the upkeep of the fabric of the house and highlight any Health and Safety and maintenance issues that require attention.
D. They will also assist the Head of Boarding in developing strategic plans for the boarding community within the School; to oversee the day to day running of the boarding community through the planning and management of staff, resources and activities; to support the school in the recruitment of boarders and to direct staff as appropriate.
E. Other responsibilities.

A. Be responsible for all aspects of safeguarding, care and well-being of the boarders in their House.
● Help to create and maintain an environment which promotes and secures high standards of care, behaviour and discipline within the boarding community.
● Ensure that they are fully conversant with the School’s ‘Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy’, and have an ongoing overview of all of the boarders’ welfare and ensure that all safeguarding concerns and incidents are recorded, followed up and passed on to the relevant members of staff.
● Ensure that contact with parents and guardians is regular and appropriate, celebrating achievement as often as possible, as well as ensuring that are aware of any problems.
● Ensure that the regular written boarding reports to parents are appropriate and sufficiently detailed.
● Ensure that, where appropriate, any pastoral / safeguarding concerns are shared with the relevant staff, including the medical centre, safeguarding lead and teaching staff.
● To ensure that the individual circumstances, needs, strengths and weaknesses of each pupil are identified and known by staff as needed, so that individual opportunities, talents and potential are developed and maximised.
● Attend all meals when on duty and monitor the eating habits of the boarders in their care.
● Liaise with the nurses to ensure that the boarding community has the necessary medical support.
● Oversee the programme of induction for new pupils in your house.
● To develop, in the boarders, a collective responsibility to be aware of the difficulties or problems of others, and to offer such support and help for each other as is appropriate.
● Encourage all boarders to become involved with the co-curricular programme, as well as the evening and weekend activities.
● Ensure that record keeping, such as sanction logs and pupil folders, are maintained to the required standard at all times.

B. They are responsible for the good order of the boarders and their possessions on a day to day basis.
● Help to create and maintain an environment and a code of behaviour which promotes and secures high standards of care, behaviour and discipline within your house.
● To support the School’s disciplinary policy and, by encouragement and reward and by a clearly understood and fair system of sanction; to inform the Head of Boarding in any cases of bullying, substance misuse or sexual misconduct.
● To ensure that boarding staff, parents and pupils understand the aims and objectives of boarding and the principles on which community life in the house is based.
● Liaise with the Head of Boarding, KSC and / or tutor as appropriate, to ensure that those responsible for the pastoral and academic care of boarding pupils within the day school are aware of any issues.
● Monitor with the Head of Boarding, all standards of care and the welfare of all boarding pupils. Ensure that, where appropriate, pastoral concerns are reported to the Head of Boarding, KSC and tutors
● Liaise with the Medical Centre to ensure that the boarding community has the necessary medical support.
● Organise and oversee a suitable programme for the induction of new pupils.
● Oversee the training of senior pupils for responsibility and leadership across the boarding community.
● Liaise with boarding and day staff to organise, develop and run a comprehensive programme of evening and weekend activities.


C. They oversee the upkeep of the fabric of the house and highlight any Health and Safety and maintenance issues that require attention
● Monitor the day to day upkeep of the House and its fixtures and fittings.
● Ensure that the maintenance team are aware of any running repairs that are required and these are added onto the maintenance log.
● Ensure that if any urgent Health & Safety issues arise, these are dealt with correctly, either directly with the maintenance team, via Estate Manager or via the Head of Boarding.
● Monitor the tidiness of the rooms and ensure that all areas can be cleaned, ensuring that the boarders’ personal hygiene is maintained at all times.
● Make suggestions to the Head of Boarding and Estates Manager about any future developments to your house.


D. Assist the Head of Boarding in developing strategic plans for the boarding community within the School; to oversee the day to day running of the boarding community through the planning of resources and activities; to support the SMT in the recruitment of boarders
● Help to create an ethos and provide the vision and direction to secure excellent pastoral care and management of all boarders.
● Keep abreast of changes to the School’s policies and procedures; working closely with the Head of Boarding to ensure that their House is meeting all of these requirements.
● Help to prepare for regular inspections and ensure that the community is meeting all the necessary requirements, including regular fire alarm practices and tests.
● Working closely with the Head of Boarding to help create and implement a development plan, identifying priorities and targets to ensure that boarding pupils receive high standards of pastoral care.
● Help prepare any appropriate marketing material for the boarding community in conjunction with the Head of Boarding and Head of admissions.
● Lead tours of your House for prospective pupils and families when requested.

F. Other responsibilities
● Produce a House handbook for students and staff on an annual basis
● Ensure that their House environment is assessed for any Health and Safety risk and that the appropriate measures are put in place to reduce this risk.
● Liaise with the Estates Manager to ensure that there is a smooth handover for any residential holiday lets.
● Always maintain the highest standards of conduct, dress and appearance.

The responsibilities listed are not exhaustive, will be subject to review and may be amended following consultation with the Principal and Head of Boarding.
Accommodation and Residence
The AHP (and his or her family as appropriate) is provided with accommodation in the Boarding House and is required to be resident throughout term, seeking the Head of Boarding’s permission to be away overnight in term time. She or he must also be available to deal with serious incidents involving boarders in their care during term time, even if they are off duty. They must also be in residence at least 48 hours prior to the start of each full term, 24 hours before half terms come to an end and for at least 24 hours after the final day of term / half terms. They may need to be available at other times during the school holidays after agreement with the Principal.
Details of the appointment:
1. This is a full-time residential position.
2. The offer of the post is subject to statutory clearance by Police check
3. The appointment will be subject to two satisfactory references, one of which must be from the candidate’s most recent employer.
