NES Pratom Level English Teacher
PostedNakhon Si Thammarat is on the southeast coast, about an hour from the pier that takes you to the east coast islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) and less than an hour from multiple waterfalls/rivers/mountains. The coast/beach starts 30 minutes from the city and goes on for 100km. Along the way are empty beaches to explore and restaurants/bars/bungalows interspersed throughout. If you like sports, the foreigner community here has weekly games of football/soccer, ultimate frisbee, and basketball; it’s also very easy to find some people to join you in whatever your interest is: yoga, tennis, badminton, ping pong, pool. It’s not a touristy town in any way so you have a great opportunity to immerse yourself in Thai culture, learn the language and make some Thai friends. One of the best things about Nakhon is the balance it has between being a real Thai city (no tourists) and the friendly foreign community that live here.
We have two English language programs at our school for Pratom level students (Grades 1-6): a full English Program and a less intensive English Enhancement Program. Students study a variety of subjects: Science, Math, Art, Computer, Health, and different aspects of English. The kids are amazing, really well-behaved and a lot of fun to be around. We teach around 15 hours a week, which is less than other schools in the area (and in Thailand in general). The Thai administration trusts us to do our jobs in a respectable, professional manner, so there's never a feeling of being watched over like some other schools. It's honestly a really good vibe and we'd like to keep it that way with any new teachers that are interested.
We have a great group of 20 teachers from America, England, Scotland and South Africa; everyone is their 20s or early 30s and very easy to get along with. We get together a lot to go away on the weekend or play sports/watch movies/eat dinner during the week. The city as a whole has a little over 100 foreign teachers. It’s a really nice community vibe here; about once a month, we’ll organize a big trip to go kayaking or camping, or to floating bungalows on a nearby lake, or to a private island in one of the national parks. Other times, people will drive their motorbikes to a beach or waterfall and have a chilled out weekend. And there’s always the party atmosphere of the islands if that’s what you’re feeling. Our foreign staff finishes school at 2:30 on Fridays so we can get a head start if we are traveling for the weekend.
We are looking for native English speakers with a Bachelor's degree in any field. We offer 1-year contracts (12 months paid, including 2 months of holidays in October and April when most teachers travel around SE Asia on their school wages) with a starting salary of 36,000 (41,000 for teachers with an Education degree) baht per month with an annual re-signing raise of 2,000 baht. To put that in perspective, you can rent a 2/3 bedroom house around town for about 7,000 baht a month (most people live with someone else and split rent) or there are apartments starting from 4,000 baht. Meals are anywhere from 30 baht to 100 baht depending on how nice of a restaurant you go to. An average weekend on the beach or on an island would cost between 3,000 and 5,000 depending on what you want to do. Almost all teachers buy a motorbike to drive round and those prices range from 7,000 for a cheap one to 18,000 for a really nice one. The salary is more than enough to live comfortably on here. If you really want to save, I've seen people get by on 10,000 baht a month, but they don't do too much to be fair.
The school helps new teachers get set up with accommodation (there are a number of apartment complexes/hotels we can set you up in initially while you look for a long-term place), bank accounts (the school sets one up for you when you arrive), transportation (most people buy a motorbike/scooter), all official documents (Non-Immigrant B visa, Work Permit) and anything else that you would need.
We currently have 4 openings for the new school year beginning in May 2020: 2 in our EEP (1 for youngers students and 1 for older) and 2 in our EP (1 for younger students and 1 for older). If you are interested in any of the positions, please contact me (firstname.lastname@example.org) for more information.
