Mother's Day essays

Making sure the right student wins!

Every August, we have a writing competition at school to celebrate Mother's Day. My job is to decide which students genuinely made the effort to produce their own work - and not just run it through Google Translate!

Helping students with spelling

Activities for your writing classes

Make spelling part of your writing lessons. It works wonders and a poor spelling student before is now a poor speller no more.

Writing activities

Some fun-filled, challenging activities to get your students writing.

Some activities may not be applicable to your students but with creativity, you can modify them to suit your students' levels and needs.

The writing connection

Writing should be an essential part of an EFL lesson

Foreign language teaching shouldn't undermine writing. Students who just merely depend on listening and speaking, without writing, tend to forget things learned.

I want your English and nothing more

Human beings first, English teachers second

Most of the students marched lockstep into the manager's office and demanded another teacher. Fair enough. I stepped aside. Was I ready for the seriousness of this class? Absolutely not. I had absolutely no intention of treating this class, or any writing class, with the seriousness that the students demanded. I am a human being first, an ESL teacher second.
