Getting to grips with ed-tech (education technology)

What aspects of technology I've found work well in the classroom

The remote classrooms and lockdowns have forced me to revisit my rather antiquated and technophobic ways. I have had to face this technology-classroom-teacher-student dialogue in all its digital reality.

Personally, I love technology in the classroom

Postbox letter from Jim

I'm 100% behind tech in the classroom, it can save me time and the kids seem to enjoy the differentiation if nothing else.

New (school) year resolutions

Improve my board work, use time more efficiently and avoid last minute rushes.

With the new school year less than a week away it’s time to make some new (school) year resolutions. I’m sure some will get thrown out of the window straight away but hopefully at least a few I’ll work on.

Do they do foreign accents?

Using fun technology to help student pronunciation

Because of way the speech recognition technology diligently transcribes sounds, the virtual assistants like Siri and Google Assistant that students have in their phones offer an interesting way for students to get feedback on how they are pronouncing their words in English.

Classroom tech that's really useful

A look at Google Classroom and the Microsoft Surface

I've worked in several classroom environments using a variety of technology, but I'll be honest: in my [not so] humble opinion, most tech implementations end up being little more than gimmicks, or worse, distractions.
