Responsibility:  Teaching the fourth R in education

It's time to make our students look good - and not just academically

In Blogs: Steve Schertzer - 11th July 2010

In our zeal to teach the three ‘R's, reading, ‘righting, and ‘rithmetic, we are neglecting to teach another very important ‘R': Responsibility; responsibility for oneself and responsibility for others

Back in the groove again

Stepping back into a Thai training room after three years away

In Ajarn Street: Articles - 10th July 2010

A two-day seminar on the topic of ‘Executive E-mail Writing' for fifteen participants at one of the world's largest auditing companies. That's what I had been asked to deliver. Despite having plenty of experience, it was still a daunting challenge given the fact I hadn't walked into a training room to conduct a workshop or seminar in almost three years. It was time to put my trainer hat on and get back into the groove.

How to get them talking

How can teachers get their students to interact in a way that's beneficial?

In Blogs: Geoff Richards - 3rd January 2010

If students don't learn to interact with their teacher and other students in English during P1 to 4 then they'll find themselves struggling to do so by the time that they enroll at a private language centre because they're preparing for university or want a better job.

Don’t take complaints or awkward suggestions to your local head. Go to them with easy to understand positive solutions instead. And don’t push your case or demand an immediate response.

Reaching a TurningPoint

A form of classroom audience response software

In Blogs: Tom Tuohy - 2nd November 2009

I’m sure that every teacher reading this will be able to think of at least one time when they looked over at their charges and felt a sense of unease, maybe even despair, at not being able to get through to them.

Games for large unruly classes

Should games always have a pedagogical value? No.

In Blogs: Geoff Richards - 2nd October 2009

Some of these appear in different versions and with different names on Dave’s ESL Café, but most of those were designed for smaller classes in countries like South Korea and Japan and don’t work very well with larger groups in Southeast Asia.

EFL Teaching in Thailand (and elsewhere) part two

What’s the best and the worst class you’ve ever taught?

In Blogs: Tom Tuohy - 1st August 2009

As promised, here are some of the lighter moments that I have been privy to in my time as an ajarn in Thailand; a time that, give or take one or two visits elsewhere, has lasted about twelve years. To be honest, I don’t have to think that hard to come up with memories of my good classes as they spring to mind with relative ease.

Writing your own readers

Why not design your own student reading material

In Blogs: Geoff Richards - 15th July 2009

Let your textbooks dictate the level and style of language to use and only introduce new vocabulary if it’s cool and/or funny. Students have a nice habit of always remembering these types of words.
