A selection of new bike prices

First a few used big bikes from Khun Narat, an American educated Thai bike enthusiast.  I bought my bike from him after he was recommended to me by a fellow farang.

Aug 2002:

1994 Honda Steed 600 cc., original paint still look good, good engine, 40,000 kms mileage, for sales at 145,000 baht (includes full registration, wait 8 weeks after payment)

1997 Yamaha XJR 1200 cc., European Specification, col. black (new paint), brandnew tire, new NGK 9R sparkplugs, new air filter, comes with original tool and manual, 20,000 kms, the bike is on registration process that will get done in few weeks, 165,000 baht

2000 Honda CBR1100XX Black Bird, 12000 kms, original paint, both tires are still new, for sales at 260,000 baht (includes full registration)

If you want to buy a new motorbike you're limited to three main types,  unless you've got some serious money and can afford the big imported bikes with their big, import tax enhanced, prices.
Step through bikes - 100 -125 cc,
Baby racing bikes - 125 - 150 cc
Baby cruisers - 150 cc
Real bikes - big stuff
Sample of new prices , as of end of 2000.   All prices in Thai Baht - about 43 Baht = US$1.  Don't expect them to increase much - a lot of competition for sales of small bikes.

Step through

Honda
Wave 41,000
Nice 39,500
Smile 39,500
Tena 44,000
Kawasaki
Cheer 39,500
Magic 36,000
Neon 36,000
Raptor 39,000
Suzuki
RC 80 29,500
Crystal 36,000
Sprint 38,000
Stinger 44,000
Yamaha
Mate 100 38,000
Belle 37,000
Rainbow 39,000
Tiara 40,500

Baby racing bikes.

Honda
LS 125 56,000
NSR 150RR 72,000
NSR 150SP 80,000
FSX 68,000

Kawasaki

GTO 40,500
Victor 52,000
KRR 71,500
Serpico 71,000

Yamaha

TZM 66,500
TZR 66,000

Not as wider choice as with the step throughs.  Mainly because step throughs are cheaper and the good ones have pretty much the same performance, especially when tuned, as the baby racers but for around 20,000 Baht less.

Choppers.

Someone at Honda had the idea of introducing a 2 stroke 150 cc cruiser for all the wannabe Harley owners who will never be able to afford the real thing.  They're designed for the Thai market so they're only suitable for small farangs, but they look quite good and are easily customised to impress the chicks.  Kawasaki had a similar idea and introduced their contender - the Boss in 1999, both these bikes are a common site - cruising along Bangkok's leafy boulevards.

Real bikes

BMW

K1100RS 787,000
Triumph
Thunderbird 453,000
Daytona 789,000
Trophy 865,000
Yamaha
Virago 535 262,000
Virago 1100 334,000
Royal Star 1300 563,000
Harley Davidson
XL 883 450,000
XL 1200C 620,000
Springer Softail  1,120,000
Heritage Classic 1,240,000

Finally for those serious riders out there who may harbour ideas of cruising around Bangkok on a mean machine, here are a few prices that will immediately put you off the notion. ( For bigger bikes it's best to buy second hand, I know people who've picked up bargains from their students.  The owners of big bikes are also more likely to service and generally care for them better than the owners of smaller bikes.)  I got my Honda CB1 for 40,000 Baht from an employee of a businessman who lived in my old apartment.  not amazingly fast but quick enough get yourself out of trouble and weave through rush hour traffic.

My 2000 Honda X-11 cost 150,000 + 55,000 to register legally.  Price still compares very well to prices on the internet for this bike or similar models in USA / UK.

As you've probably figured that while small bikes are cheaper here, big bikes are much more expensive than in the USA or Europe. (All a matter of extremely high import taxes.)

Happy riding !
